Acro and tumbling: strength, flexibility, and flips taught safely

Acro at The Oaks starts with 30-minute Tiny Tumblers for the youngest and runs through Beginning 1 and 2, Intermediate 2 and 3, and a 90-minute Advanced class — seven classes a week, second only to ballet. Dancers build the strength and flexibility for rolls, walkovers, and aerials, progressing only when each skill is solid. Tiny Tumblers is $28 a month; one-hour classes are $52.

What to wear

Athletic clothing with no shoes or socks and hair pulled back, as the handbook lists; teachers ask for fitted tops (loose shirts fall during inversions) and no jewelry.

What it costs

$28 a month for Tiny Tumblers; $52 for one hour; Advanced (90 minutes) through the calculator.

A few good questions

What families ask.

Is acro safe?

Acro is taught as a progression — flexibility and basics such as backbends and handstands first, then harder skills as each one is solid, which is how the studio describes the class (student information).

Acro or tumbling — which is it?

Both: tumbling skills (rolls, handsprings) taught with dance transitions so they fit into choreography.

Can my child start at 3?

Tiny Tumblers is the entry class for preschoolers; confirm your child's age with the studio when you book the trial.
